How do you clean and maintain a roof lantern?

Safe cleaning methods for self-cleaning glass and powder-coated frames, and a simple yearly check that keeps a lantern weathertight.
A roof lantern needs very little looking after, but a little regular care keeps it clear, keeps the seals healthy and stops small problems becoming leaks.
Cleaning the glass
- Self-cleaning glass: rinse with clean water, using a soft cloth if needed. Avoid abrasives, harsh chemicals and silicone-based products.
- Standard glass: warm water with a little mild detergent, then rinse.
- Never stand or kneel on the lantern. Clean from a safe position, or use a water-fed pole from the ground or a safe roof edge.
Cleaning the frame
Wash powder-coated aluminium with mild soapy water once or twice a year, more often near the coast. Do not use solvents or scouring products.
A yearly check
- Clear leaves and debris from around the upstand and roof outlets.
- Look for cracked or lifted roof membrane at the upstand.
- Check vent actuators open and close fully and the rain sensor is clean.
- Look for misting between the panes, which means a failed unit.
