Large roof lanterns
Large roof lanterns, from around 3 metres long up to about 6 metres on some ranges, bring daylight deep into open-plan kitchens and living spaces. At these sizes the lantern uses intermediate rafters, and the roof structure, delivery and lifting all need planning.

In short: Lanterns of three metres and more for open-plan extensions, with intermediate rafters. Guide prices start from £2,595 including VAT, supply only.
What changes when a lantern gets big?
Above roughly 3 m long or 2.5 m wide, ranges add intermediate rafters to support the glass. Glass units get heavier and the lantern can weigh several hundred kilograms, so your builder or engineer needs the lantern weight to size the trimmers and beams around the opening.
Delivery is also different: a large lantern arrives as a frame kit with separate glass, and lifting it onto the roof needs enough people or lifting equipment. We give you the approximate weight with the quote so you can plan it.
How much glass is too much?
In England, building regulations guidance generally expects the total area of windows, rooflights and glazed doors in an extension to stay at or below 25% of the extension's floor area plus the area of any openings it covers, unless energy calculations show the design still complies. A large lantern can use up most of that allowance on its own, so check your design with your designer or building control body early.
What does a large lantern cost?
Guide prices below include VAT for supply only. Large lanterns benefit most from solar-control glass, which adds roughly 10% to the lantern price.

Large roof lanterns: common questions
What is the biggest roof lantern you can supply?
It depends on the range. Some go to about 6 m by 4 m with intermediate rafters. Send us your kerb size and we will confirm what can be made.
Do large lanterns overheat a room?
A large area of south-facing glass can make a room warm on sunny days. Solar-control glass, an opening vent and good background ventilation all help. Our guide on overheating explains the options.
Does a large lantern need structural calculations?
The roof structure around it usually does. Your engineer or building control body will want the lantern's weight and the opening size.
How is a large lantern delivered?
On pallets, usually with the frame and glass packed separately. The heaviest single item is normally a glass unit, which needs two or more people to lift safely.
