Aluminium roof lanterns
Almost every modern roof lantern is aluminium, and for good reason. Aluminium is strong enough to span large panes with slim bars, it does not rot or warp, and it takes a durable powder-coated finish in any colour. Thermal breaks in the frame stop heat flowing straight through the metal.

In short: Slim, strong, thermally broken frames in powder-coated colours. Guide prices start from £1,295 including VAT, supply only.
Why aluminium over uPVC?
Aluminium frames are much slimmer for the same strength, so you see more sky. They hold their colour well, allow two different colours inside and out, and can be made in larger sizes. uPVC lanterns cost less but have chunkier frames and are mostly white.
What is a thermal break?
Aluminium conducts heat well, so lantern frames include an insulating barrier, usually polyamide or resin, between the inner and outer metal. This reduces heat loss through the frame and the risk of condensation on the inside face.
What does an aluminium lantern cost?
Guide prices below include VAT for supply only with self-cleaning double glazing in a stock colour.

Aluminium roof lanterns: common questions
Do aluminium lanterns get cold and drip?
Thermally broken frames are designed to reduce cold bridging. Condensation can still form if a room is very humid and poorly ventilated, which is why kitchens and bathrooms need extract ventilation.
Will the colour fade?
Polyester powder coatings are designed for outdoor use and hold their colour well. Coastal sites benefit from occasional washing to remove salt deposits.
Is aluminium recyclable?
Yes, aluminium can be recycled repeatedly. Ask your local waste site about the glass and seals, which are handled separately.
Can I paint an aluminium lantern later?
It can be repainted with suitable systems, but it is far better to choose the right powder-coated colour at the start.
