uPVC roof lanterns
uPVC roof lanterns use the same idea as aluminium ones, a ridge, hips and glazed slopes, but with uPVC-clad frames that cost less. They suit smaller openings, budget extensions, garden rooms and outbuildings where slim sightlines matter less than price.

What are the trade-offs?
uPVC frames are bulkier than aluminium, so you see more frame and slightly less sky. Most uPVC lanterns are white, with a smaller choice of colours, and maximum sizes are smaller than aluminium ranges. In return the lantern costs noticeably less.
Where does uPVC make sense?
On a small utility or porch roof, a garden room or a rental property where cost is the priority. For a statement kitchen extension, most buyers prefer aluminium.

uPVC roof lanterns: common questions
Are uPVC lanterns as good as aluminium?
They do the same job at a lower price, with bulkier frames and fewer colour and size options. For most showpiece extensions aluminium is worth the extra.
Will white uPVC yellow over time?
Modern uPVC profiles are UV-stabilised and should stay white with normal cleaning. Very old lanterns, especially with polycarbonate panels, are the ones that discolour.
Can I get a grey uPVC lantern?
Some ranges offer foiled colours. The choice is narrower than aluminium.
Is uPVC heavier?
Weight is dominated by the glass, so the difference is small.
