Choosing aluminium roof lanterns in Surrey

Slim, strong, thermally broken frames in powder-coated colours.

Across Surrey, the shortest day brings around 7h 51m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 62.1° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

  • Thermally broken aluminium frames
  • Won't rot, warp or need painting
  • Durable powder-coated finish
  • Larger sizes than uPVC can reach

Delivery and fitting in Surrey

Delivery to mainland addresses here is quoted for your postcode and confirmed in writing before you order.

Fitting can be quoted where we have cover; send your postcode and photos of the roof and kerb and we will confirm before quoting.

Planning and building regulations in Surrey

England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.

Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Aluminium roof lanterns in Surrey: questions

Is aluminium recyclable?

Yes, aluminium can be recycled repeatedly. Ask your local waste site about the glass and seals, which are handled separately.

Do aluminium lanterns get cold and drip?

Thermally broken frames are designed to reduce cold bridging. Condensation can still form if a room is very humid and poorly ventilated, which is why kitchens and bathrooms need extract ventilation.

Will the colour fade?

Polyester powder coatings are designed for outdoor use and hold their colour well. Coastal sites benefit from occasional washing to remove salt deposits.

Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Surrey?

Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
