Choosing large roof lanterns in Hampshire

Lanterns of three metres and more for open-plan extensions, with intermediate rafters.

Across Hampshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 54m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 62.4° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Planning and building regulations in Hampshire

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.
