How is a roof lantern fitted?

A step-by-step outline of fitting a roof lantern to a ready upstand, from delivery checks to the final weathertight check.
Every range has its own instructions, and those always come first. This outline shows the usual sequence so you know what your installer will do and what to prepare.
- Check the delivery: all frame parts, glass units, seals and fixings against the packing list, and the glass for damage.
- Check the upstand: size, square, level and weathertight with the membrane dressed up the outside.
- Assemble the frame on the upstand: ridge, hips and rafters, following the instructions' sequence.
- Fix the frame to the upstand with the specified fixings.
- Lift in and seat the glass units, then fit the caps, gaskets or seals.
- Fit any vent actuators and connect them to the power supply your electrician has provided.
- Check the lantern is weathertight and clean the glass with the method in the care guide.
- Finish the internal reveal and decorate.
How many people does it take?
Small lanterns need two people. Larger lanterns and heavy glass units need more people or lifting equipment. We give the approximate weight on your quote so your installer can plan the lift safely.
Working at height
Fitting a lantern is roof work. Edge protection, a safe means of access and a plan for lifting are part of doing it safely. If you are not sure your installer has this covered, ask us to quote for fitting.
