Choosing replacement roof lanterns in Greater London

Swap a tired, leaking or polycarbonate lantern for modern double glazing.

• Replace old polycarbonate with glass
• Reuse the kerb if sound and to size

Planning and building regulations in Greater London

England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.

On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.
