Choosing rectangular roof lanterns in Greater London

The classic double-hipped lantern: a ridge, four sloping sides and the most size choice.

Across Greater London, the shortest day brings around 7h 50m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.9° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Planning and building regulations in Greater London

In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.

On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Rectangular roof lanterns in Greater London: questions

Can a rectangular lantern be made to an exact size?

Yes. Made-to-measure lanterns are built to the external kerb size you give us, usually in 10 mm steps within the range's limits. Made-to-measure takes longer than a stock size and cannot be cancelled once ordered, so measure twice.

Which way should the ridge run?

The ridge runs along the longer side. On a square opening there is no ridge and the lantern becomes a pyramid.

Does a longer lantern need extra support?

Long lanterns use intermediate rafters inside the lantern itself. The roof structure around the opening must be designed to carry the lantern's weight; your builder or engineer sizes the trimmers.

Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Greater London?

Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
