Choosing rectangular roof lanterns in Hertfordshire

The classic double-hipped lantern: a ridge, four sloping sides and the most size choice.

Across Hertfordshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 47m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.7° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Planning and building regulations in Hertfordshire

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Rectangular roof lanterns in Hertfordshire: questions

What is the most common rectangular roof lantern size?

Sizes of 1000 × 2000 mm and 1500 × 2500 mm are common standard sizes for kitchen and dining extensions, but the right size is the one that matches your kerb. If your kerb is not built yet, our sizes guide helps you pick a standard size first.

Can a rectangular lantern be made to an exact size?

Yes. Made-to-measure lanterns are built to the external kerb size you give us, usually in 10 mm steps within the range's limits. Made-to-measure takes longer than a stock size and cannot be cancelled once ordered, so measure twice.

Does a longer lantern need extra support?

Long lanterns use intermediate rafters inside the lantern itself. The roof structure around the opening must be designed to carry the lantern's weight; your builder or engineer sizes the trimmers.

How quickly can I get a roof lantern in Hertfordshire?

Stock sizes are typically ready in 5–10 working days, made-to-measure in 3–4 weeks, plus delivery. Your quote gives the date for Hertfordshire.
