Choosing self-cleaning glass roof lanterns in Hertfordshire

A coated outer pane that breaks down dirt in daylight and lets rain wash it away.

Across Hertfordshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 47m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.7° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Coated outer pane loosens dirt in daylight
Less cleaning on hard-to-reach glass
Simple care: rinse with clean water
Rain sheets off and carries dirt away

Planning and building regulations in Hertfordshire

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Self-cleaning glass roof lanterns in Hertfordshire: questions

Does it work under trees?

Less well. Sap and leaf debris build up faster than daylight and rain can deal with them, so lanterns under trees need more regular rinsing.

Is self-cleaning glass the same as solar-control glass?

No. Self-cleaning is a coating that sheds dirt; solar control reduces heat gain. Many lantern units combine both.

Can the coating be damaged?

Yes, by abrasive cleaning, some chemicals and silicone. Follow the care instructions supplied with your lantern.

Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Hertfordshire?

Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
