Choosing anthracite grey roof lanterns in Hertfordshire

RAL 7016 anthracite grey, a widely chosen colour to match grey doors and windows.

Across Hertfordshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 47m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.7° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Matches most grey bifold and sliding doors
Matt or textured finishes
Any other RAL grey on request
Usually no surcharge as a stock colour

Planning and building regulations in Hertfordshire

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Anthracite grey roof lanterns in Hertfordshire: questions

Does anthracite show dirt?

Less than white. Dust and pollen are more visible on dark gloss finishes, which is why most grey lanterns use a matt or textured finish.

Will anthracite get hot in the sun?

Dark frames absorb more heat than white, but lantern frames are designed for it. The bigger effect on room temperature is the glass, which is why solar-control glass matters on south-facing roofs.

Is anthracite grey the same as RAL 7016?

Yes. Some suppliers call it slate grey or charcoal grey, which can cause confusion, so always check the RAL number.

Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Hertfordshire?

Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
