Choosing bespoke roof lanterns in Surrey

Made to your exact kerb size, including long, gable-ended and L-shaped designs.

Across Surrey, the shortest day brings around 7h 51m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 62.1° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

  • Gable-ended and L-shaped designs on request
  • Fixed price confirmed before ordering
  • Made to your exact external kerb size
  • Approval drawing before manufacture

Planning and building regulations in Surrey

England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.

Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Bespoke roof lanterns in Surrey: questions

Can I return a bespoke lantern?

No. Goods made to your specification are excluded from the 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Your other legal rights, for example if the lantern is faulty, are not affected.

Will I see a drawing before it is made?

For made-to-measure and special shapes, yes: the order is based on a drawing you approve, so the size you check is the size that gets made.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Accurate to the millimetre on the outside of the kerb, measured at several points. Kerbs are rarely perfectly square, so measure both diagonals too. Our measuring guide shows how.

Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Surrey?

Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
