Choosing square roof lanterns in West Yorkshire

Four triangular panes meeting at a point: a pyramid lantern for square openings.

Across West Yorkshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 25m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 59.7° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Planning and building regulations in West Yorkshire

England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.

Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Square roof lanterns in West Yorkshire: questions

Will a square lantern leak at the top?

It should not when it is correctly installed and maintained. The apex is factory-designed to shed water; leaks usually come from the upstand or roof membrane rather than the lantern itself, which is why the upstand detail matters.

Is a pyramid lantern more expensive than a rectangular one?

Per square metre it can cost slightly more, because every pane is a triangle and the apex needs a special joint. The difference is usually small next to the effect of size and glass choice.

Can I have an opening vent in a pyramid lantern?

Some ranges can fit a vent in one of the triangular panes, others cannot. We will tell you on the quote whether your chosen range allows it.

How quickly can I get a roof lantern in West Yorkshire?

Stock sizes are typically ready in 5–10 working days, made-to-measure in 3–4 weeks, plus delivery. Your quote gives the date for West Yorkshire.
