Choosing orangery roof lanterns in the West Midlands

The glazed centrepiece of an orangery roof, framed by a solid perimeter.

Across the West Midlands, the shortest day brings around 7h 39m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 60.9° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Contemporary or traditional styling
Colour-matched to doors and windows
Sized to leave a solid perimeter border
Pairs well with solar-control glass

Planning and building regulations in the West Midlands

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Orangery roof lanterns in the West Midlands: questions

Should the lantern match my bifold doors?

A common choice is to match the outside colour, often anthracite. The inside can be white to keep the ceiling bright.

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

A conservatory has a mostly glazed roof; an orangery has a mostly solid roof with a lantern in the middle and usually more solid wall. Orangeries are easier to keep comfortable year round.

Can I add a lantern to my existing orangery roof?

If the roof has a suitable opening and upstand, yes. If not, the roof needs structural alteration first, which is a job for a builder with an engineer's input.

Who checks building regulations for a lantern in the West Midlands?

Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
