Choosing contemporary roof lanterns in the West Midlands

Slim frames, fewer bars and a lower profile for a cleaner view of the sky.

Across the West Midlands, the shortest day brings around 7h 39m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 60.9° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Slim frames and fewer glazing bars
Slim profile suits anthracite and black

Planning and building regulations in the West Midlands

England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.

Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Contemporary roof lanterns in the West Midlands: questions

Do contemporary lanterns cost more?

Usually a little more per size than a standard range, because the bigger glass units cost more to make and handle.

Is a contemporary lantern the same as a flat rooflight?

No. A contemporary lantern still has sloping glass and a ridge or apex; it simply has slimmer frames and fewer bars. A flat rooflight is a single, nearly flat pane of glass on an upstand.

Are contemporary lanterns weaker?

They are engineered for the sizes they are sold in. That is exactly why their maximum sizes are often smaller: the frame is slimmer, so each range has its own limits.

How quickly can I get a roof lantern in the West Midlands?

Stock sizes are typically ready in 5–10 working days, made-to-measure in 3–4 weeks, plus delivery. Your quote gives the date for the West Midlands.
