Choosing black roof lanterns in the West Midlands

RAL 9005 jet black for crisp contrast and steel-look interiors.

Across the West Midlands, the shortest day brings around 7h 39m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 60.9° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

Planning and building regulations in the West Midlands

In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.

Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Black roof lanterns in the West Midlands: questions

Is a black lantern too dark inside?

The frame is a small part of what you see; the glass dominates. Black frames inside create a graphic grid that many people like. If you want a softer look, choose white inside.

Does black get hotter?

The frame surface does, but the effect on the room is small next to the choice of glass.

Will black fade?

Quality powder coatings are designed for UK weather. Matt finishes may show a slight sheen change over many years.

Who checks building regulations for a lantern in the West Midlands?

Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
