Planning and building regulations for Darwen
For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.
On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.
Building regulations in Darwen are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Darwen
Can the inside be a different grey?
Yes. Any combination is possible on most aluminium ranges; non-stock colours carry a small surcharge.
Does anthracite show dirt?
Less than white. Dust and pollen are more visible on dark gloss finishes, which is why most grey lanterns use a matt or textured finish.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Darwen?
With the midsummer sun about 59.7° high at noon, roof glass in Darwen gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Darwen?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
