Planning and building regulations for Christchurch
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.
Building regulations in Christchurch are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Christchurch
Is triple glazing heavier to lift?
Yes, the glass is roughly 45% heavier. Plan for extra hands or lifting equipment on larger lanterns.
Do I need triple glazing to meet building regulations?
Not usually. Well-specified double glazed lanterns generally meet the limiting values for rooflights. Triple glazing is an upgrade, not normally a requirement. Your building control body can confirm for your project.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Christchurch?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Christchurch?
With the midsummer sun about 62.7° high at noon, roof glass in Christchurch gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
