Planning and building regulations for Sandown
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.
Building regulations in Sandown are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Sandown
Will a traditional lantern need planning permission?
The style does not change the planning position; size, height and location do. Listed buildings and conservation areas are the main cases where consent is more likely to be needed.
Is a traditional lantern harder to clean?
There are more bars, so there are more edges for dirt to collect along. Self-cleaning glass helps, but a gentle rinse once or twice a year is still worthwhile.
How quickly can I get a roof lantern in Sandown?
Stock sizes are typically ready in 5–10 working days, made-to-measure in 3–4 weeks, plus delivery. Your quote gives the date for PO36.
Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Sandown?
Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
