Planning and building regulations for Kirkby
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.
Building regulations in Kirkby are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

What is the largest square lantern?
Ranges differ. Many go to around 3 m square, with extra hip bars on larger sizes. Tell us your kerb size and we will confirm which ranges can make it.
Is a pyramid lantern more expensive than a rectangular one?
Per square metre it can cost slightly more, because every pane is a triangle and the apex needs a special joint. The difference is usually small next to the effect of size and glass choice.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Kirkby?
With the midsummer sun about 60.0° high at noon, roof glass in Kirkby gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Kirkby?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
