Planning and building regulations for Croydon
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.
Building regulations in Croydon are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Croydon
Does a small lantern need an opening vent?
Not usually. Background ventilation for the room can come from trickle vents or extract fans. Vents are more useful on lanterns over kitchens and large living spaces.
What is the smallest roof lantern?
Many ranges start at around 800–1000 mm. Below that, a flat rooflight is usually the better product.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Croydon?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
Do you deliver roof lanterns to Croydon?
Yes. Delivery to Croydon (CR0) is quoted for your exact postcode and confirmed in writing on your quote, together with the lead time.
