Choosing self-cleaning glass roof lanterns in Herefordshire
A coated outer pane that breaks down dirt in daylight and lets rain wash it away.
Across Herefordshire, the shortest day brings around 7h 44m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.4° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.
- Rain sheets off and carries dirt away
- Coated outer pane loosens dirt in daylight
- Simple care: rinse with clean water
- Less cleaning on hard-to-reach glass

Planning and building regulations in Herefordshire
For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.
Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.
Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Self-cleaning glass roof lanterns in Herefordshire: questions
Do I still need to clean self-cleaning glass?
Occasionally. It keeps the glass cleaner for longer, but heavy dirt and droppings still need a gentle rinse, especially in dry spells.
Is self-cleaning glass the same as solar-control glass?
No. Self-cleaning is a coating that sheds dirt; solar control reduces heat gain. Many lantern units combine both.
Does it work under trees?
Less well. Sap and leaf debris build up faster than daylight and rain can deal with them, so lanterns under trees need more regular rinsing.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Herefordshire?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
