Swap a tired, leaking or polycarbonate lantern for modern double glazing.
On the shortest day Birkenhead gets about 7h 29m of daylight, with the sun only 13.2° above the horizon at noon. Light from the sky overhead is the brightest available in winter, which is exactly what a roof lantern collects.

Planning and building regulations for Birkenhead
For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.
Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.
Building regulations in Birkenhead are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Birkenhead
Can I replace polycarbonate panels with glass?
Usually not in the old frame: glass is much heavier than polycarbonate and the frame was not designed for it. Replacing the whole lantern is the safer route.
My old lantern leaks. Is it the lantern or the roof?
Often the roof or kerb detailing. A survey or close inspection will tell. If the lantern is the problem, replacing it is usually better value than repairing old polycarbonate.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Birkenhead?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
Can you fit a roof lantern in Birkenhead?
We can quote for fitting where we have cover. Send your postcode and photos of the roof and kerb, and we will confirm before quoting.
