Swap a tired, leaking or polycarbonate lantern for modern double glazing.
In midsummer the noon sun stands about 61.8° high over Rickmansworth, so roof glazing gets the full strength of it. That is why solar-control glass is worth considering on larger lanterns here.

Planning and building regulations for Rickmansworth
England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.
On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.
Building regulations in Rickmansworth are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Rickmansworth
My old lantern leaks. Is it the lantern or the roof?
Often the roof or kerb detailing. A survey or close inspection will tell. If the lantern is the problem, replacing it is usually better value than repairing old polycarbonate.
Will a new lantern be warmer?
A modern double glazed lantern with a thermally broken frame loses far less heat than polycarbonate.
Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Rickmansworth?
Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your district, borough or unitary council before ordering.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Rickmansworth?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
