Rectangular roof lanterns for Newmarket homes
The classic double-hipped lantern: a ridge, four sloping sides and the most size choice.
On the shortest day Newmarket gets about 7h 42m of daylight, with the sun only 14.3° above the horizon at noon. Light from the sky overhead is the brightest available in winter, which is exactly what a roof lantern collects.

Planning and building regulations for Newmarket
England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.
Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.
Building regulations in Newmarket are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Newmarket
Which way should the ridge run?
The ridge runs along the longer side. On a square opening there is no ridge and the lantern becomes a pyramid.
Does a longer lantern need extra support?
Long lanterns use intermediate rafters inside the lantern itself. The roof structure around the opening must be designed to carry the lantern's weight; your builder or engineer sizes the trimmers.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Newmarket?
With the midsummer sun about 61.2° high at noon, roof glass in Newmarket gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
Can you fit a roof lantern in Newmarket?
We can quote for fitting where we have cover. Send your postcode and photos of the roof and kerb, and we will confirm before quoting.
