Choosing rectangular roof lanterns in Gloucestershire

The classic double-hipped lantern: a ridge, four sloping sides and the most size choice.

Across Gloucestershire, the shortest day brings around 7h 47m of daylight and the midsummer sun reaches about 61.7° at noon. A lantern collects light from the bright overhead sky all year, and the right glass keeps the long summer days comfortable.

  • Suits kitchen-diners and rear extensions
  • Standard sizes or made to your kerb
  • Stock anthracite, black or white, or any RAL
  • The most size options of any lantern shape

Planning and building regulations in Gloucestershire

For homes in England, a new or replacement rooflight should achieve a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better in the horizontal position, under Approved Document L.

Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.

Building regulations are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Rectangular roof lanterns in Gloucestershire: questions

Can a rectangular lantern be made to an exact size?

Yes. Made-to-measure lanterns are built to the external kerb size you give us, usually in 10 mm steps within the range's limits. Made-to-measure takes longer than a stock size and cannot be cancelled once ordered, so measure twice.

What is the most common rectangular roof lantern size?

Sizes of 1000 × 2000 mm and 1500 × 2500 mm are common standard sizes for kitchen and dining extensions, but the right size is the one that matches your kerb. If your kerb is not built yet, our sizes guide helps you pick a standard size first.

Which way should the ridge run?

The ridge runs along the longer side. On a square opening there is no ridge and the lantern becomes a pyramid.

Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Gloucestershire?

Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
