Planning and building regulations for Cardiff
In Wales, the Welsh Government's own Approved Document L applies, with limiting values that are not the same as England's.
Permitted development rules in Wales are set separately, so check with your council, especially for listed buildings and conservation areas.
Building regulations in Cardiff are checked by your local authority building control team. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work in Wales too. A competent person scheme installer can self-certify; otherwise building control should be notified.

Questions from Cardiff
Does an opening vent let insects in?
When open, yes, as with any window. Some ranges offer fly screens.
What happens if it rains while the vent is open?
With a rain sensor the vent closes automatically. Without one it stays where you left it, so a sensor is worth having.
Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern in Cardiff?
Often not, but it depends on the roof, the property and whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Check with your county or county borough council before ordering.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Cardiff?
With the midsummer sun about 62.0° high at noon, roof glass in Cardiff gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
