Slim frames, fewer bars and a lower profile for a cleaner view of the sky.
At 55.41°N, Alnwick sees roughly 7h 05m of daylight in late December and 17h 28m in late June. A lantern faces the bright overhead sky all year, so it brings in useful light even on the short, grey days.

Planning and building regulations for Alnwick
England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.
Lanterns on permitted development extensions are part of the extension's height limits. Adding one to an existing roof is different: over 150 mm of projection can mean a planning application.
Building regulations in Alnwick are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Alnwick
Can I have a contemporary lantern in white?
Yes, though most buyers choose grey or black because the slimmer frame is the point and dark frames disappear against the sky.
Is a contemporary lantern the same as a flat rooflight?
No. A contemporary lantern still has sloping glass and a ridge or apex; it simply has slimmer frames and fewer bars. A flat rooflight is a single, nearly flat pane of glass on an upstand.
Can you fit a roof lantern in Alnwick?
We can quote for fitting where we have cover. Send your postcode and photos of the roof and kerb, and we will confirm before quoting.
How quickly can I get a roof lantern in Alnwick?
Stock sizes are typically ready in 5–10 working days, made-to-measure in 3–4 weeks, plus delivery. Your quote gives the date for NE66.
