Planning and building regulations for Carshalton
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
Planning-wise, a lantern on a new extension is judged as part of that extension, while one added to an existing roof can fall outside permitted development if it stands more than 150 mm proud.
Building regulations in Carshalton are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Carshalton
Is a contemporary lantern the same as a flat rooflight?
No. A contemporary lantern still has sloping glass and a ridge or apex; it simply has slimmer frames and fewer bars. A flat rooflight is a single, nearly flat pane of glass on an upstand.
Are contemporary lanterns weaker?
They are engineered for the sizes they are sold in. That is exactly why their maximum sizes are often smaller: the frame is slimmer, so each range has its own limits.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Carshalton?
With the midsummer sun about 62.1° high at noon, roof glass in Carshalton gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
Do you deliver roof lanterns to Carshalton?
Yes. Delivery to Carshalton (SM5) is quoted for your exact postcode and confirmed in writing on your quote, together with the lead time.
