Planning and building regulations for Westhoughton
England's Approved Document L caps the U-value of new or replacement rooflights in existing homes at 2.2 W/m²K, calculated with the glass horizontal.
On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.
Building regulations in Westhoughton are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Questions from Westhoughton
Do aluminium lanterns get cold and drip?
Thermally broken frames are designed to reduce cold bridging. Condensation can still form if a room is very humid and poorly ventilated, which is why kitchens and bathrooms need extract ventilation.
Is aluminium recyclable?
Yes, aluminium can be recycled repeatedly. Ask your local waste site about the glass and seals, which are handled separately.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Westhoughton?
With the midsummer sun about 59.9° high at noon, roof glass in Westhoughton gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Westhoughton?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
