Planning and building regulations for Wickford
In England, building regulations energy guidance sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new and replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured horizontally.
On a permitted development extension the lantern counts towards the extension's height; on an existing roof, a rooflight projecting more than 150 mm may need planning permission.
Building regulations in Wickford are checked by your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. Replacing a rooflight in an existing home is building work. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise building control must be involved.

Do aluminium lanterns get cold and drip?
Thermally broken frames are designed to reduce cold bridging. Condensation can still form if a room is very humid and poorly ventilated, which is why kitchens and bathrooms need extract ventilation.
Can I paint an aluminium lantern later?
It can be repainted with suitable systems, but it is far better to choose the right powder-coated colour at the start.
Who checks building regulations for a lantern in Wickford?
Your local authority building control team or a registered building control approver. For a lantern in a new extension it forms part of the extension's approval; replacements in existing homes have their own rules.
Is it worth having solar-control glass in Wickford?
With the midsummer sun about 61.8° high at noon, roof glass in Wickford gets strong summer sun. Solar control is recommended for large or south-facing lanterns.
